Where are they now? Vincent Candela

French footballer Vincent Candela was part of the double winning squad that picked up the World Cup in their home land during 1998 and went on to win the European Championship in 2000.

A year later, in 2001 Candela also won the league title with Serie A giants AS Roma and established himself as one of the world’s top full-backs.

Since retiring from the game in 2007, the 37-year-old still finds time to route on the side where he spent nine years of his career. “I don’t think of myself as a former Roma player. I have a fever for that jersey,” the Frenchman revealed to Il Messaggero.

“This is my city. I played in England, Udine, Siena, Messina, but all that counted was Roma. I have no regrets, I enjoyed playing, I won everything.”

On the current crop of players Candela remarked, “The players are isolated. You see them with their huge headphones, listening to music. Nobody laughs. There is little passion,” he concluded.

The former Roma player also spoke on the English Premier League being a low point in his career.

“I got out of Bolton quick,” he said. “The weather and English football were not for me. The forwards used to tackle me, a defender. I did not understand.”

He now finds himself keeping busy away from the game, dedicating himself to time with his wife and kids. We guess a family holiday to Lancashire won’t be on the cards anytime soon!
