Liverpool chasing £2m African Cup of Nations star
Liverpool are ready to spend £2m to land Barcelona and Mali midfielder Seydou Keita, according to the Daily Mail.
The 32-year-old has a contract with the Catalan giants until 2014 but with intense competition for a midfield spot at the Nou Camp, Keita could favour a move to the Premier League with Liverpool.
Keita is currently away on international duty with Mali and scored his side’s winning penalty against Gabon to take them to the semi-finals of the competition.
However, Mali crashed out 1-0 to favourites Ivory Coast and will now have to settle for a third-place play-off match against Ghana.
It was thought that Liverpool could delve into the January transfer window to find short-term cover for Lucas Leiva who is sidelined for the rest of the season. That didn’t happen though and a summer move for Keita could merely be to increase the competition for places in the Reds’ squad.
