Liverpool set to lose out in race for La Liga defender
Brendan Rodgers hopes of adding Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta to his ranks have taken a blow after it was revealed that Zenit St Peteresburg have joined the hunt for the Venezuelan, according to The Metro.
The 27-year-old is said to have a £26m release clause in his contract which could have been a stumbling block for the Reds, however, Amorebieta could be available for a reduced rate as his contract expires in 2014.
Italians Roma are another team said to snooping around the highly-rated defender and believe an offer of around £8m should be enough to prise him away from Bilbao. Though, with greater wealth behind them, Zenit are still believed to be the front runners for the centre half’s much craved signature.
The Venezuela international’s representatives, Football Management 04, have now revealed Liverpool are keen to sign him.
In a statement issued to Marca, they claimed Amorebieta was being eyed by a number of clubs. “His good season has attracted interest from several teams, one of which is Liverpool,” the agency said.
The company added Liverpool ‘is the one that has shown the most interest up to now’.
However, they also released a statement claiming that Amorebieta’s preference was to sign another long term contract with the Basque club.
