Cult Hero: Alpay (Aston Villa)

Club: Aston Villa
Position: Defender
Nationality: Turkish
Turkish defender Alpay signed for Aston Villa from Fenerbahce in a £5.6m deal in July 2000.
He came with a reputation for arguing with officials and one of the most infamous stats saw him sent off for punching Portugal’s Fernando Couto. Two days later, he also reportedly came to blows with an Instabul taxi driver. Feisty stuff!
So it was no surprise then that Alpay’s volatile nature frothed to the surface when he appeared to slap David James after making a mistake which gifted Liverpool a goal in 3-0 defeat.
12 yellow cards during the 2000/01 season illustrated his uncompromising style, but Alpay proved to be a solid signing, allowing Villa to part with Ugo Ehiogu in the knowledge they had a decent replacement.
