The battle of London’s championship contenders looked to be heading for a draw until Cudicini’s dramatic mistake with only 15 minutes left gave Arsenal a 2-1 victory over Chelsea.
Edu put Arsenal ahead after just four minutes, while striker Hernan Crespo scored a brilliant leveller three minutes later. The Argentine returned from an offside position to fire a brilliant long-range drive into the top corner past a startled Jens Lehmann.
