Name: Rene Higuita

Position: Goalkeeper

Nationality: Columbian

The Columbian stopper gained a reputation as someone who liked to bring the ball out of defence. There was nothing orthodox about the Rene Higuita, often thinking he was a magician with the ball at his feet. The wild keeper also fancied himself as a set-piece specialist and would be allowed to go up the field to take free-kicks and penalties.

This huge self-confidence cost his country dearly in the 1990 World Cup against Cameroon. He sought to take the ball round star player Roger Milla but the forward robbed him of the ball and placed the ball into an empty net.  Bizarrely, Higuita reacted by blaming his defenders for his costly error.

Despite a number of ridiculous antics down the years, Higuita is most famous for a spectacular scorpion kick on his own goal line to prevent the ball from going in the net in a friendly against England in 1995.
