Rate the Pundit – Paul Merson
Pundit: Paul Merson
Role: Expert for Sky Sports and often found as a panelist on Gillette Soccer Saturday
If there’s one thing Paul Merson likes to do it’s to make bold, and often rash, statements. While the majority of pundits and experts are mainly conservative in their views, Merson quite be quite the opposite. He’s certainly not scared to but his reputation on the line – sometimes (or alot of the time) making himself look rather silly.
Let’s rewind back to the 2006/07 season. A largely under-strength Liverpool side had just been thrashed 6-3 by a youthful Arsenal at Anfield. Merson, an expert in the Sky studios on the night, feared the worst for Liverpool in their upcoming European tie against Barcelona and simply laughed at the proposition of Rafa Benitez’s side beating the European champions.

Not deterred by previous experiences, Merson continues to have his outright predictions and recently claimed Arsenal would “batter” Manchester City. The game finished 0-0.
In addition to his frank and forthright statements, Merson can frequently struggle to grasp the English language with his pronunciation (don’t get him to say that) pretty terrible.
We’ve come to the conclusion that Paul Merson is like Marmite – you either love him, or hate him. Kudos for speaking his mind, but don’t forget that it can come back to bite you in the arse.
Oh, by the way, Merson’s tip for the title? Arsenal. We’ll see!
We asked for your views on Paul as a pundit. Here is a sample of what you lovely people came up with…
JoshCrizo_Twitt: “Don’t know how he’s got a job to be honest.”
Ecxhoes: “About as useful as tits on a snake.”
Josh_Eves: “Very knowledgable, adds decent humour as well. Great on Soccer Saturday, not MOTD material though.”
rosscoarsenal: “He has simple thoughts, not much depth or detail.”
YoungGunsBlog: “I like the fact he isn’t afraid to say what he thinks, whether that’s right or wrong.”
Modric011: “Glen Johnson would give him a 0/10.”
paulharper82: “He’s the new David Pleat. He can’t pronounce anyone’s name!”
joshkclarke: “The words of an alcoholic drug-addict are always worth a listen.”
