Former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is a candidate for the Real Madrid job should Jose Mourinho leave the Bernabeu at the end of the season, reports the Independent.
The Spaniard has been out of a job since leaving Inter Milan in late 2010 but is still highly-regarded in football for his achievements at both Liverpool and Valencia.
Madrid bosses could well remember the hiding that they suffered by Benitez’s Liverpool in 2009 when they suffered a 5-0 aggregate defeat to the Reds in the Champions League knockout phase.
Recent press reports, confirmed by the Independent, have claimed that Jose Mourinho is looking to move away from Madrid at the end of the season with rumours of the former Chelsea coach falling out with senior players and the club’s hierarchy.
It has been suggested that Mourinho wants to return to the Premier League where he first managed with Chelsea back in 2004. The Portuguese manager won two titles for the Blues in 2004/05 and 2005/06.
