The pressure upon Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger grew yet further over the weekend as his side crashed to a 2-0 defeat to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
The loss means, barring a miracle return leg against AC Milan, Arsenal will now have gone seven seasons without a trophy wince landing the 2005 FA Cup in a penalty shootout victory over Manchester United at Cardiff.
Wenger’s legacy at Arsenal is already assured with Premier League title wins in 1997/98, 2001/02 and the historic unbeaten season of 2003/04 etched into Gunners’ folklore. But with the club seemingly further away than they ever have been before from the league championship, is it time for Wenger to step down?
The Frenchman, who has a degree in economics, has made Arsenal the most profitable club in the land when it comes to buying and selling players but the supporters want trophies, not figures.
Then there’s the growing concern that forward Robin van Persie could leave the Emirates at the end of the current campaign with the Dutchman’s contract running out in 2013. If so, Wenger will make another substantial profit on a player he bought for around £3m in 2004 but will lose another star at the peak of their powers just like last summer when Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy left the club.
A report from today’s Daily Mail claims that Wenger will be given a £55m war-chest to turn things around this coming summer but is he the right man to do it?

For me, until Arsenal fail to qualify for the Champions’ league two years in a row, Wenger is the right man for the job.
