Basel winger Xherdan Shaqiri has turned down the opportunity to play for either Liverpool or Manchester United to sign for German giants Bayern Munich, according to the Mirror.
Shaqiri was prominent as Basel knocked Manchester United out of the Champions League last year and boss Sir Alex Ferguson would have noted the 20-year-old’s positive impact on the game.
Meanwhile, Liverpool could be looking to strengthen their right-side of midfield with a different type of attacking threat having used Jordan Henderson and Dirk Kuyt in the position for much of the season.
However, the Mirror reports that Shaqiri has passed a medical with Bayern and will join the club on a four-year contract at the end of the current campaign.
Quoted by the paper, Bayern’s director of sport Christian Nerlinger said: “We are delighted that we have been able to sign Xherdan Shaqiri, one of the most coveted young talents in European football.”
