‘Lazio Won’t Sign van Persie’ – Sporting Director
Following photos of Robin van Persie being spotted in Rome over the weekend, reports suggested that the Manchester United striker was heading for a £10 million move to Lazio.
However, it turns out the Dutch striker was only on holiday in the Italian capital, Lazio sporting director Igli Tare has confirmed.
The former Albania international has been quoted by Football Italia as saying:
“On van Persie, all I can say is that I respect him as a striker, but unfortunately he’s outside our parameters.
“There has never been a meeting, this is gossip, not transfer news. We don’t want to create illusions, this is not real.
“We want to improve the team.”
All-time World Cup record goalkeeper Miroslav Klose, now 36-years-old has confirmed that he will remain at Lazio next season. However, the Rome club have limited options as backup to the striker which had fueled speculation that van Persie could be on his way.
There has been reports earlier this year that Louis van Gaal could offload his fellow countryman this summer, whilst United have been strongly linked with a move for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema this week.
The two deals Manchester United have already completed this summer is the £25 million signing of Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven and the release of Tom Cleverley to Everton.
United are expected to spend big again this summer after qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, now with the ambition of winning the Premier League in van Gaal’s second season in charge.
