The weekend in Spain
Real Madrid remain on top of La Liga after a comfortable 2-0 victory over city rivals Atletico.
In truth, the derby was over within 20 minutes, seemingly both teams knew what the outcome was going to be. Two goals, the first from Ricardo Carvalho and then a well-taken free-kick by Mesut Ozil, put the hosts in control.
Atletico forced their way back into the game with spells of possession and half-chances but never looked like unsettling Real. In fact, the highlight of the second period was probably Cristiano Ronaldo’s delightful pass to Xabi Alonso that came off his back.
Real are one point clear of Barcelona who picked up a 3-1 away win at Getafe thanks to goals from Lionel Messi, David Villa and Pedro Rodriguez. Villarreal also kept up the pressure at the top with a 4-1 home success over Athletic Bilbao, although it seems inevitable that we’re heading for another Real/Barca battle for supremacy in Spain.
In other results, Espanyol moved into fourth with a 1-0 win over Malaga and Deportivo recorded back-to-back wins following eight without, beating Levante 2-1.
