Chelsea Closing in on 3rd Major Summer Signing
Chelsea are close to agreeing a deal to sign Galatasaray left-back Alex Telles as a replacement for Filipe Luís, according to the Express.
The Premier League champions are searching for another left-back to compete with César Azpilicueta this season after the Guardian reported earlier this month that Filipe Luís is heading back to the Spanish capital with Chelsea agreeing to sell him back to Atlético Madrid.
Filipe Luís only moved to Stamford Bridge from Atléti last summer but failed to establish himself in José Mourinho’s side, making only 15 appearances.
The Brazilian’s departure will leave a void in Mourinho’s team, and the Express are today reporting that Chelsea are now close to reaching a deal with Galatasaray to sign Alex Telles.
Telles, also Brazilian, only joined the Turkish side in January 2014 from his homeland, but his performances over the past 18 months have alerted the likes of Chelsea.
The newspaper has not given any further details on the deal; no suggestion of a price tag or contract length, but if the report is accurate then the 22-year-old would become Chelsea’s third major signing of the summer, following Asmir Begović and Radamel Falcao.
Alex Telles is an attack-minded left-back and there were certainly questions raised over his defensive abilities in last season’s UEFA Champions League. Chelsea boss Mourinho is a fan of defensive-minded full-backs too so perhaps he’s seen something in the youngster that we haven’t.
One potential stumbling block over any deal for Telles could be his work permit though, as he is has yet to represent his national team at senior level.
