Wenger Admits He Was A Few Million Shy of Signing Chelsea Star
Arsène Wenger has revealed that Arsenal were ‘a few million’ short of signing Eden Hazard before he moved to Chelsea.
The Belgian superstar joined Chelsea after they won the 2011-12 UEFA Champions League, snubbing the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City and Bayern Munich in the process.
Hazard has gone on to dominate the Premier League in his three seasons at Stamford Bridge, culminating in his first league title in England last season.
It could have been all so different for their London rivals Arsenal, as manager Wenger admitted he was interested in signing the 24-year-old, but his bid fell a few million short:
“On whether Hazard was ever a target:
“On how close the deal was:
A few million!”
The defending FA Cup champions Arsenal face 2014-15 Premier League winners Chelsea in the 2015 FA Community Shield at Wembley Stadium this Sunday.
Wenger is still without a competitive victory over José Mourinho but will be hoping summer signing Petr Čech can make a difference both in their opening competitive fixture of the new season, and in their Premier League title bid.
