Is Josh McEachran ready for the Premier League?
Our resident Chelsea correspondent – Editor of TheShedEnder – asks if the young midfielder is ready for the big time…
Carlo Ancelotti spoke highly of his bright young talent Josh McEachran yesterday and suggested that the 17-year-old is ready to start in Premier League games.
Before the season started it was unthinkable that such a young player could be putting pressure on any first team player for his place, but here we are. What is even more incredible is that the player who’s currently under pressure from McEachran is no less than Michael Essien, arguably the best all-round player on Chelsea’s books.
But a run of terrible results and a drastic slump of form has brought the places of Essien, Didier Drogba, Ashley Cole, Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka into question, especially as the likes of McEachran, Daniel Sturridge and Patrick van Aanholt have impressed when given their chances.
Many expect the established stars who missed out the Ipswich game in the FA Cup to be recalled, but when asked if any of his big names may be omitted from today’s Blackburn game, Ancelotti said: “Yes, why not? My job is to choose the best team to play the game. Maybe sometimes there are some players who are not in the best condition to play.”
“This does not mean they are not important. I had fantastic players in the past at Milan and they did not play every game. But McEachran, for example, is ready to start in the Premier League because he has done very well.
“He has confidence, personality, is strong. You look at him and think he won’t be strong in the tackle but he was against Ipswich. He doesn’t lack anything. He’s a good player, so we are lucky to have found him,” said the gaffer in the Guardian.
With an ageing squad, which is severely lacking in depth, it can only be a good thing that our young stars are starting to put some pressure on those ahead of them in the pecking order.
Do the Chelsea faithful believe that their young stars are ready for the big time?
