Predicted Bayern Munich XI to Face Arsenal

Bayern Munich head to the Emirates this evening as odds-on favourites to take another three points in this season’s UEFA Champions League group stage.

The Bundesliga champions have already taken maximum points from their opening two matches whilst Arsenal are yet to get on the board, suffering shock defeats to both Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiacos.

Pep Guardiola’s side have smashed the Greek side 3-0 and the Croatian’s 5-0 to open their campaign and some Arsenal fans fear their side could be on for a similar defeat.

Here is the XI I think we’ll see the German side name at the Emirates:

Goalkeeper: Manuel Neuer
One of the best goalkeepers in the world, Manuel Neuer often doesn’t have much to do in any one game such is the dominance in possession and territory of his outfield teammates.

Defence: Philipp Lahm, Jérôme Boateng, Javi Martínez, David Alaba
Jérôme Boateng has developed into a top centre-back over the past 12 months or so, no longer so error prone in the middle.  Pep Guardiola is turning Javi Martínez into his centre-back partner.  Both full-backs love to bomb on.  Philipp Lahm in particular has an excellent partnership with Thomas Müller down the right.  Arsenal’s best chances in this match may come on the counter-attack by exploiting the space down the wings left behind by Lahm and David Alaba.

Midfield: Arturo Vidal, Xabi Alonso, Thiago Alcântara
All three players are capable of creating chances.  Arturo Video is more of a box-to-box midfielder who likes a few long range shots but is also susceptible to giving away silly free kicks.  A fit Thiago Alcântara is creating numerous chances in that midfield to start the new season and is also capable of a spectacular goal.  Xabi Alonso is more of an anchor man who looks after the ball well and capable of springing an attack with his excellent long-range passing.

Attack: Thomas Müller, Robert Lewandowksi, Douglas Costa
There’s goals all over this attack.  Robert Lewandowski’s form is unreal, and has three goals in his first two Champions League matches this season as well as 12 in eight Bundesliga matches (six starts).  Thomas Müller is not to be forgotten down the right as he has nine domestically and two in this competition already.  His movement down the right is excellent and always seems to drift infield to find himself free in the penalty area.  Douglas Costa creates chance after chance down that left and loves running the right-back, as well as shooting himself.
