Off the pitch… Ugly post-match scenes spoil Wear-Tyne derby

Following Asamoah Gyan’s injury-time equaliser in the Wear-Tyne derby on Sunday, a pitch invader stormed onto the pitch before shoving Newcastle keeper Steve Harper to the ground.
Black Cats boss Steve Bruce said: “I hope they ban him from here for a long period. I would like to say ‘Well done’ to the Sunderland fans who gave him up… He was only a kid and now he’s in police custody.”
“We love the passion of the football up here but don’t need scenes like that. It baffles me. It’s a sad indictment of the youth of today.”
Trouble flared after the final whistle, with large groups of supporters provoking each other. Plastic seats and bottles were thrown across a line of police officers, meanwhile further violence was reported outside the ground.
The police continue to investigate.
