Pundit: Mark Lawrenson (Former Liverpool and Preston North End player)

Role: BBC expert, pundit, commentator and predictor

Alongside Alan Hansen, the other-half of the Liverpool defensive partnership that became so formidable in the 80s is Mark Lawrenson. As you could also argue about their playing ability, Lawrenson is the less-able pundit of the two.

One thing we’ve noticed about Lawrenson in recent years is that he fancies himself as a bit of a comedian. They say that sarcasm is the lowest form of wit,  something which Lawrenson has in abundance. Quite often while sitting next to John Motson in the commentary box (what a wonderful combination eh?), Lawrenson likes to crack a joke or two (or three, or four).

Oh, and then there’s his BBC predictions column which are so accurate that Liverpool would probably be 10 points clear at the top of the table if his guesses actually had come to fruition.

Speaking of wonderfully-informed predictions, during the 2001/02 season Lawrenson’s premonition that Bolton would definitely get relegated from the Premier League came back to bite him in the arse (or the face you could say) when, having made a bet with a group of supporters, the ex-Liverpool man was forced to shave off his infamous moustache.

The lowdown

We asked for your views on Lawro as a pundit. Here is a sample of what you lovely people came up with…

DominicPollard: “Hate him. Boring, not funny, not insightful, out-dated, wierd-looking.”

joshkclarke: “The day he shaved off his tash is the day he lost my respect. Looks ill, maybe should sleep more.”

miltspur: “Dreadful.”

FootballEd: “Very underated. Tactically astute if a little negative and whiney.”

grahamruthven: “Probably the second worst pundit on tv (behind robbie savage). Comes across as a grumpy oldd man who cant be bothered.”

The final score

Each week we ask viewers for a score out of 10 for our pundits, we then average out the result to come up with a mark out of ten.

Mark Lawrenson scored… 3/10! A poor score from Lawro means he sits just two places above bottom place on our table of shame!

Marc laurenson gets lost in his own argument against var during sweden and Switzerland.
Sounds like a grumpy old man
He is outdated and it is a pity that he is in a position to influence others.
his commentary of france australia lack any kind of research and knowledge. Pavard is the worst right back hmmm look at that strike against argentina.
Moderation is the key please use the nuances of grey or people might now believe that England is the best team in the world when they are merely doing ok ; a draw a defeat and two wins one at the last minutes against lesser opposition.
Please find another job mr lawrenson
