Player Ratings: Preston 1-2 Arsenal
Arsenal came from behind to score a late 2-1 victory over Championship side Preston North End in the third round of this season’s FA Cup.
Preston took the lead after only six minutes through Callum Robinson. The young forward missed an easy chance to set up his teammate to make it 2-0 in the first half that the lower league side dominated.
A game of two halves – Arsenal were lucky to be only 0-1 down at half-time but equalised in the opening minute after the break. Olivier Giroud fired home an 89th minute winner to book the Gunners into round four.
Arsène Wenger has now progressed in all 21 third round ties.
Here are CSAR’s player ratings from Preston 1-2 Arsenal:
David Ospina 6 – Fortunate to have only conceded one goal though that was down to his defence rather than his own performance. David Ospina had little chance with Preston’s early goal.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles 6 – Was owned by Aidan McGeady in the first half and grateful that his team dominated the second half. Put in a couple of good crosses after the break.
Gabriel Paulista 4 – Positioning and decision-making was woeful in the first half and fortunate for the Championship side being wasteful in the final third that his side only went in 0-1 at the break.
Shkodran Mustafi 6 – Made an important block and interception in the first half to keep to scoreline at 0-1. Saw an effort well saved in the final 20 minutes.
Nacho Monreal 7 – Paul Gallagher gave the Arsenal left-back a couple of difficult moments. Nacho Monreal made an important goalline clearance at 0-1.
Aaron Ramsey 8 – Missed Arsenal’s two good opportunities in the first half when they were on the backfoot. Different player in the second half after scoring inside 60 seconds of the restart and saw a lot of the ball.
Granit Xhaka 6 – Saw a lot of the ball as usual but didn’t do a lot with it. Ben Pearson got the better of the Arsenal midfield in the first half before finishing the game with cramp.
Lucas Pérez 8 – Lively performance from the Spaniard cutting in on his left foot from the right wing. Tested Chris Maxwell twice in the Preston goal. Cheeky backheel to set up Giroud’s winner.
Alex Iwobi 6 – Showed some nice touches in tight areas but aside from teeing up Ramsey’s equaliser there wasn’t a lot of production from Alex Iwobi in the final third despite playing the number 10 role.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain 6 – Disappointing performance from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who saw a lot of the ball down the left but didn’t do a great deal with it. Replaced by Danny Welbeck in the second half.
Olivier Giroud 8 – Had been firing in some poor efforts before scoring the late winner. Oliver Giroud worked hard up front bringing teammates into play and causing the Preston defence problems.
Danny Welbeck (8 mins) N/A – Sent on at 1-1 but didn’t get on the ball very much at all until forcing a save out of Maxwell with the final effort of the game.
Rob Holding (1 min) N/A – Brought on in stoppage time to help see out the win.
Jeff Reine-Adelaide (1 min) N/A – Late run out for the youngster to help run the clock down.
