Liverpool will be looking to get a result at St Mary’s in their EFL Cup semi-final first leg on Wednesday night.

Prior to the game, Jürgen Klopp has spoken to the media at his pre-match press conference to give reporters a team news and injury update.

The Reds boss was first pleased to confirm that his side suffered no fresh injury concerns during Sunday’s goalless draw versus Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup third round.

Klopp was also able to confirm the huge boost that Philippe Coutinho is set to return to the first-team squad on Wednesday after stepping up his training recently.

The Brazilian attacker has been sidelined since damaging ankle ligaments early on in the game versus Sunderland in late November.  However, Klopp has suggested that Coutinho will start from the bench versus Southampton.

Jürgen Klopp is quoted by the Liverpool Echo as saying:

“I think Phil [Coutinho] is fit enough to be part of the squad. That means then there could be minutes. How many, whatever, I don’t know. It depends on the game.

“He’s on a good way. It was six weeks, seven weeks, that’s long. He needs minutes in training especially, but of course as soon as possible he needs minutes in games. We will see. No final decision made until now.”

The Liverpool manager was also able to reveal that Joël Matip is stepping up his training following a few weeks out with an ankle injury.

James Milner has been passed fit to face Southampton after a minor calf injury saw the makeshift left-back ruled out of the weekend’s FA Cup tie.  Milner was not expected to feature anyway.

Further positive news from the German manager was that Jordan Henderson is in a ‘very good way’ after missing the last two matches with a heel injury.

Here is what Klopp told reporters:
