José Mourinho Gives Injury Update on Key Duo Ahead of Liverpool Game
Manchester United host rivals Liverpool in a huge clash towards the top of the Premier League on Sunday.
The Red Devils start the weekend in sixth place, three points off the UEFA Champions League places and could hand Jürgen Klopp’s side a big blow in their title bid with victory.
Liverpool are currently five points behind league leaders Chelsea and five ahead of United.
Ahead to the game, José Mourinho has offered an update on the fitness of Zlatan Ibrahimović and Marcos Rojo.
Ibrahimović had been expected to return to United’s starting XI for United’s EFL Cup semi-final first leg victory over Hull City last night having been rested for last weekend’s 4-0 FA Cup thrashing of Reading.
However, the Swede was left out of the squad before Mourinho revealed shortly before kickoff that Ibrahimović was ill.
Fans were left wondering whether their 35-year-old star would be back in time for Sunday’s huge tie but the United boss has now confirmed that Ibrahimović should be fit to face Liverpool.
The Portuguese coach told ManUtd.com:
“Zlatan is ill so I think no problem, I think he will be fine.”
This news will come as a welcome relief to Manchester United as the striker has proven to be an excellent summer acquisition on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain by scoring 18 goals in 28 appearances in all competitions so far this season.
And while Zlatan Ibrahimović looks set to face Liverpool this weekend there is less certainty over the availability of defender Marcos Rojo as his manager confirmed he is a doubt for the game.
Rojo didn’t feature in last night’s win against Hull after picking up a muscle injury versus Reading over the weekend. José Mourinho was able to confirm that the injury isn’t serious but that the Argentine remains a doubt to feature versus the Merseyside club.
Mourinho told ManUtd.com:
“I don’t know [if Rojo will be fit]. Marcos has a muscular problem, not big. I’m not saying he’s not ready to play, I’m saying that I have my doubts.”
Manchester United will be hoping that Rojo does recover in time for the weekend as Eric Bailly’s duty at the African Cup of Nations means the Red Devils have limited options in the middle of their defence should the South American be ruled out.
Mourinho selected Chris Smalling and Phil Jones as the centre-back pairing last night and the England duo will likely continue their partnership this weekend too.
