Chelsea Open Talks to Sign €40m Man Utd Target, Club President in London for Talks
It has been reported this week that Benfica club president Luis Filipe Vieira has been in London to drum up interest in a couple of Benfica’s players. It appears that the Portuguese Primeira Liga champions are interested in selling one or two of their players, perhaps to raise money for other transfer business or in order to fulfill the demands of the UEFA’s Financial Fair Play laws.
Vieira had reportedly travelled to China previously in an attempt to increase the interest in his club’s players. However, in news that Chelsea fans will find very interesting, Portuguese media outlet A Bola are reporting that Chelsea have made contact with Benfica to declare their interest in Nelson Semedo. This is certainly interesting news given that Luis Felipe Vieira was in London earlier this week also.
According to the report, Benfica are said to be demanding as much as €40 million. A number of clubs are said to be interested in signing in the defender including Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City and Bayern Munich. Should these aforementioned clubs all declare their interest then it is very possible that Benfica will get as much as possible should a bidding war break out.
Nelson Semedo is a right-back and is versatile enough to play on the left of defence and as a wingback as well. Should Chelsea sign the young Portuguese player it would give Antonio Conte another option in his preferred 3-4-3 formation.
The Blues have started Victor Moses at right wingback in all their games since Conte switched to the 3-4-3 formation whilst Branislav Ivanović has come on for the Nigerian to finish the odd game in that role too. The contract of the 32-year-old Serbian expires at the end of the season so the Premier League leaders are widely expected to sign a player to compete with Moses in this role, either this month or in the summer.
Whether Chelsea’s interest is real or just media speculation from Portugal remains to be seen, but if the West London club are really interested in the player, Benfica appear almost desperate to sell some of their players and that would play into the hands of the Blues.
