Player Ratings: Chelsea 2-0 Hull City
Chelsea have extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points after a hard fought victory at Stamford Bridge over Hull City today.
Diego Costa was controversially left out of last weekend’s 3-0 win at Leicester City but marked his return with the opening goal in first half stoppage time today.
Hull began to press after the hour before Antonio Conte’s side put the game away with 10 minutes left as an unmarked Gary Cahill headed home a free kick.
Here are CSAR’s player ratings from Chelsea 2-0 Hull City:
Thibaut Courtois 8 – The Belgian goalkeeper may have felt he had a busier game than expected, forced into a couple of smart saves from long range and a smart save in the final minute to deny Oumar Niasse on the turn.
César Azpilicueta 8 – Solid performance from the centre-back who prevented Hull from causing any problems on his side of the pitch.
David Luiz 8 – Quiet game in the middle of the back three as Hull were reduced to long-range efforts. Had a couple of wild efforts of his own.
Gary Cahill 8 – Headed home Chelsea’s goal to put the game away after Hull had been on a good spell prior. Hull didn’t create much and the Blues defence dealt with their set pieces very well.
Victor Moses 8 – Assisted Diego Costa’s opener with a drilled cross in first-half stoppage time. Comfortable game defensively but still got back to help out in a hardworking performance down the right.
Nemanja Matić 6 – Uneventful game for the Serbian who did not get on the ball as often as he does and nor did he have much defensive work to do in the middle of the park either.
N’Golo Kanté 8 – Another energetic performance, winning the ball back to his side and venturing forward with it.
Marcos Alonso 6 – Fortunate the referee turned a blind eye on his foul inside the box on Abel Hernández early in the second half. Didn’t look too secure at the back when tested but was a good outlet down the left wing going forward.
Pedro 6 – Quiet game down the right wing from the Spaniard who was unproductive in the final third.
Diego Costa 8 – Looked sharp on his return and netted the opening goal in first-half stoppage time after Hull City had been resolute to that point. Forced a fine late save from Eldin Jakupović too.
Eden Hazard 7 – Got on the ball a lot and laid it off to teammates in the final third but ultimately not a threat to the Hull goal nor created anything for teammates before he was replaced.
Willian (21 mins) N/A – Won the free kick from which Chelsea scored their second and was lively in the final third for the time he was on the pitch.
Cesc Fàbregas (21 mins) N/A – Gave Hazard a rest in the final 20 minutes and an extra body in the middle as the scoreline was 1-0 at the time with Hull pushing forward. Cesc Fàbregas delivered the free kick from which Cahill headed home for 2-0.
Michy Batshuayi (5 mins) N/A – Another very late run out for the Belgian striker who has still not started a single Premier League game.
