Kostas Manolas Could Become Chelsea’s Latest Big Signing, Roma Already Have His Replacement
A few days ago there were reports that AS Roma and Internazionale had agreed a deal that will see centre-back Kostas Manolas move to the San Siro. But it been a couple of days now and there are no bigger media outlets reporting the story which could mean that the initial reports were way off the mark. At the time it was unthinkable that Roma would allow one of their best players to leave to a direct rival in the middle of the season.
However, we sincerely believe it is a matter of when and not if Roma will sell Manolas. Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United have also been linked with the signing of the Greece international. Although the Gunners only signed Shkodran Mustafi and Rob Holding in the summer Arsène Wenger could still be looking for another centre-back with Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny both in their 30s now.
Chelsea seem based-placed to sign the former Olympiacos defender. With John Terry likely to leave Chelsea in the summer when the 36-year-old’s contract expires, Manolas will have a good chance of playing regular first team football with the Blues. And Roma could be tempted to sell their player due to the wonderful performance of Federico Fazio since joining the club on loan last summer from Tottenham.
The Serie A side have an option to turn the Fazio loan deal to a permanent one would think they are very likely to do so. This means they will have technically signed Manolas’ replacement, a situation that could play into Chelsea’s hand. And considering the financial situation of the Italian league, they may be tempted to sell the player to the highest bidder.
Kostas Manolas will certainly not come for cheap, as the player’s agent recently confirmed Roma rejected a bid of £35 million from Arsenal for the player last summer. Manolas has all it takes to replace John Terry in Chelsea’s defence and it will be a big surprise if they do not go for him in the summer. He certainly has the ability to be an upgrade on David Luiz and Gary Cahill too.
