La Liga News… Arsenal linked with former Liverpool star Javier Mascherano

Arsenal are being linked with a shock move for Barcelona defensive midfielder Javier Mascherano.

The Argentine international has become second favourite to Sergio Busquets at the Nou Camp, and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is reportedly considering a surprise swoop for the player.

Following his £22m move to Catalonia in the summer, Mascherano has failed to settle and reports in Spain claim that he is considering a move back to England.

A product of the River Plate youth team, Mascherano made his senior debut for the club in 2003 before signing for Corinthians in 2005. He would make a controversial switch to West Ham United the following season, but rarely featured for the Hammers before his move to Liverpool.

Mascherano’s signature would be seen as a real coup by the North London side, although it’s unclear if Wenger would be willing to meet a high-valuation to bring the player to Arsenal.

This may be a more realistic move for Wenger than the reported bid to bring Messi to Arsenal in the summer.

Although Wenger is also interested in Pedro, so whichever way you look at it Barcelona need to brace themselves for a significant Arsenal raid this year.

Fabregas will get to play with some of those Barca players after all – but it will be in an Arsenal shirt.
