Chelsea Boosted In Chase For £26m Rated Star
Chelsea have been handed a boost with the news that Valencia may be forced to sell Joao Cancelo this summer in order to meet Financial Fair Play Requirements, according to The Metro.
The defender has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the past with manager Antonio Conte believed to be keen on the 22-year-old who has also attracted interest from Barcelona.
Although Valencia rebuffed Chelsea’s interest previously they could now be open to a sale for a player who is expected to fetch upto £26 million.
That price tag is easily within Chelsea’s reach with Conte understandably keen to strengthen his defence having seen Branislav Ivanovic leave in January and with John Terry out of contract in the summer.
Conte has established his favoured back three of César Azpilicueta, David Luiz and Gary Cahill with Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso as his wing-backs to great effect this season with the Blues looking set to be crowned champions.
The recall of Moses has raised the most eyebrows with the 26-year-old having established himself as first choice under Conte after loan spells with Liverpool, Stoke and West Ham United.
In fact such has been his form this season he has already been rewarded with a new deal that will keep him at the club until 2021.
Cancelo, who can play as right full-back or midfield, would therefore provide Conte with plenty of options although looks most likely to challenge Moses for the wing back slot.
While Conte has been able to use a mostly settled side in his first campaign in English football, largely due to a lack of European football, he will need greater competition for places next season with Chelsea looked destined to return to Champions League action.
Cancelo would provide another option to Moses down the right side although he can still provide an attacking threat and the ability to link up with Pedro down that flank.
Barcelona had also been interested in Cancelo as they seek an option but it is believed their interest has cooled, with the Catalans seemingly back in for Hector Bellerin.
