The Sun has reported this morning that Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier has accused Steve Bruce of “racism” in their bitter row over Darren Bent’s transfer.

Houllier said: “When I heard it first of all, I thought it was not gracious and our club has been more gracious. I thought: ‘Hang on a second, why is he having a go at me?’ But don’t worry I’m a foreign manager. I’m an easy target.”

He later added: “I’m French by the way. With another manager, I’m sure it would be different.”

The tabloid paper has no doubt worsened matters by adding fuel to the fire, however Houllier’s recent accusations of xenophobia will ultimately provoke much debate over the footballing weekend.
