Chelsea could lose star to Real Madrid
Real Madrid have been in search for a new goalkeeper for the previous two summers, according to reports.
The reigning Champions League holders have been unsuccessfully chasing Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea.
Keylor Navas has predominately been the Madrid goalkeeper since the start of last season but has been at fault for a number of goals conceded during that run.
Now Spanish newspaper Marca are reporting that Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is refusing to sign a new deal at Stamford Bridge as he seeks a move to the Spanish capital.
The Belgian star is in the final two years of his current deal with the defending Premier League champions and previously spent three years in Madrid with Real’s rivals Atlético, surprisingly winning La Liga in 2013-14 and reaching the UEFA Champions League final that season too.
Should these reports from Spain be accurate and that Courtois is indeed set to refuse any offers of a new contract it would then be interesting to see whether Chelsea would sell in the summer or keep a hold of their goalkeeper until his contract expires at the end of next season, but allowing him to leave on a free transfer.
Chelsea spent a reported €9 million on Courtois from Genk in 2011 where he was immediately sent out on loan to Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid. He missed only three La Liga games in three seasons before José Mourinho recalled him for the start of the 2014-15 Premier League campaign. The 25-year-old has won the English top flight in two of his three seasons in West London.
