Player Ratings: Chelsea 4-2 Watford
Chelsea came from behind to score two late goals in a thrilling 4-2 win over Watford at Saturday lunchtime.
Antonio Conte’s side had taken a 1-0 lead inside 12 minutes from a fantastic strike from Pedro after the home side were controversially awarded a corner.
However, Marco Silva’s side fought back, first with Abdoulaye Doucouré’s equaliser in first-half stoppage time and then Roberto Pereyra giving the Hornets the lead within five minutes of the restart.
Brazilian star Richarlison missed two guilt-edge chances either side of Watford taking the lead and they proved costly. First, substitute Michy Batshuayi equalised in the final 20 minutes before César Azpilicueta headed the Blues back in front in the 87th minute. Batshuayi wrapped up the game with a nice dink over Gomes in stoppage time.
Here are CSAR’s player ratings from Chelsea 4-2 Watford:
Thibaut Courtois 5 – Wasn’t given much chance with either goal conceded and did make three saves.
Antonio Rüdiger 7 – Stuck tight to Troy Deeney as the Watford striker didn’t test Courtois all game.
David Luiz 5 – Reverted back to centre-back after starting in holding midfield role midweek. However, teh Brazilian made an unconvincing clearance from a corner that led to Watford’s equaliser. David Luiz also failed to pick up Richardlison for a free header inside the six-yard box early in the second half.
Gary Cahill 5 – Got sucked inside by Troy Deeney despite two teammates having the situation under control, which left Roberto Pereyra unmarked to give the visitors the lead early in the second half.
César Azpilicueta 7 – Was in the right space at the right time to score the winner but it wasn’t a great performance from César Azpilicueta beforehand. Chelsea had lots of time and space down the right wing, particularly in the first half but the right wingback and his teammates failed to take advantage of this. Azpilicueta also failed to pick up Richarlison inside the opening two minutes of the second half and will have been grateful the Brazilian missed a sitter from close range.
Tiémoué Bakayoko 6 – The French midfielder was outclassed by his opposite number, made a number of poor touches in conceding possession but did also win a number of tackles for his side.
Cesc Fàbregas 8 – Saw a lot of the ball, contributed to good attacks, creating a few chances and tested Gomes twice in a good performance from Cesc Fàbregas.
Marcos Alonso 5 – Poor positioning defensively and offered nothing going forward. In fact, Marcos Alonso didn’t get on the ball much at all before being replaced midway through the second half.
Pedro 8 – A cracking opening goal and set up Michy Batshuayi’s equaliser before being replaced at 2-2. Pedro got in some good positions down the right wing, particularly in the first half.
Álvaro Morata 5 – Looked unfit for a second game in a week. Álvaro Morata only lasted an hour before Antonio Cone rightfully replaced him. During his time on the pitch the Spaniard only had one effort on goal and also picked up a yellow card.
Eden Hazard 9 – Was a nightmare for the Watford defence all game, running at them and setting up several chances for teammates. Kiko Femenía couldn’t get close to Eden Hazard and the Watford midfield didn’t do much better either.
Michy Batshuayi (30 mins) 8 – Only had 15 touches of the ball but two of them were goals as Michy Batshuayi proved key to Chelsea’s come-from-behind victory on Saturday.
Willian (23 mins) N/A – A hardworking effort after coming on a 1-2 to help Conte’s side pull off the comeback.
Davide Zappacosta (5 mins) N/A – Came on with five minutes to go at 2-2 and saw his side score two goals whilst on the pitch.
