Player Ratings: Liverpool 5-2 Roma
Liverpool have all but qualified for this season’s UEFA Champions League final with a stunning 5-2 thrashing of AS Roma in the first leg of their semi-final at Anfield this evening.
The Italian side started off brightly before Liverpool grew into the game and deservedly took the lead on 35 minutes through Mohamed Salah. The 2017-18 PFA Player of the Year doubled the Reds’ lead on the stroke of half-time and it was nothing less than they deserved.
Sadio Mané missed a hat-trick of opportunities in the first half before getting on the scoresheet 10 minutes into the second half to make it 3-0. A brace from Roberto Firmino in the space of eight minutes just after the hour mark made the scoreline 5-0.
However, a mistake from Dejan Lovren led to Edin Džeko pulling one back before Diego Perotti chipped home a penalty five minutes later.
Here are CSAR’s player ratings from Liverpool 5-2 Roma:
Loris Karius 7 – Made an excellent save in the opening 10 minutes at 0-0 but otherwise Loris Karius didn’t have a great deal to do.
Trent Alexander-Arnold 7 – Bombed down the right wing from full-back but rarely picked out a teammate from a number of crosses. Aleksandar Kolarov struck the bar early on from left wingback but otherwise a comfortable game defensively for Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Dejan Lovren 7 – Headed against the crossbar at one end and was solid in defence for the opening 80 minutes before misjudging a high ball to allow Edin Džeko to score a consolation.
Virgil van Dijk 8 – Won his aerial duels and kept the Roma attack quiet.
Andrew Robertson 7 – Didn’t bomb on hugely from left-back but had a comfortable game in defence.
Jordan Henderson 8 – Excellent at controlling the game in central midfield up against the likes of Daniele De Rossi and Radja Nainggolan.
James Milner 7 – Harsh penalty against James Milner late on who had otherwise been playing a decent game in the middle of the park as Liverpool dominated possession and the game.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain N/A – Went off injured after only 17 minutes and replaced by Georginio Wijnaldum.
Mohamed Salah 10 – A phenomenal brace of goals and assists from the Egyptian who tore the Roma defence apart before being replaced on 74 minutes at 5-0.
Roberto Firmino 10 – Roma struggled with all of Liverpool’s attack and Roberto Firmino too helped himself to a pair of goals and assists.
Sadio Mané 9 – Got into some great positions including a one-on-one at 0-0 but only got on the scoresheet once.
Georginio Wijnaldum (73 mins) 7 – Helped in the build up of attacks and bringing the ball forward after coming on very early in the first half.
Danny Ings (16 mins) N/A – Liverpool seemed to lose their momentum when Mohamed Salah went off, conceding twice.
