Not Torreira – Arsenal Open Talks to Sign £35m La Liga Star
Despite the reports that Lucas Torreira is on his way to Arsenal, it seems Unai Emery is still interested in signing another midfielder as several others are still being linked with the Gunners. First it was Éver Banega, then Adrien Rabiot was also linked, but all the rumours in the media have turned to Sevilla’s Steven Nzonzi in recent time.
According to a report from Sky Sports two days ago, the Premier League giants are in talks with Sevilla to sign Nzonzi. Initial reports suggested that they had had a bid of €15 million (£13.25m) turned down by the Spanish side. Steven Nzonzi is said to have put in a transfer request after the reported bid was rejected, which appears to be helping Arsenal’s cause.
Spanish media outlet Eldesmarque have also stated the player will not show up for pre-season with Sevilla after the World Cup, which is an indication that the player is very keen on forcing through a move. The 29-year-old is part of the French squad that face Belgium in the semi-final on Tuesday.
It is odd but I doubt all the media outlets, especially the big ones, like Sky Sports, would be wrong about Arsenal’s interest. This smoke seems to have fire. But why would Arsenal want to sign both Steven Nzonzi and Lucas Torreira in the same transfer window?
The only reason I can think of at this time is that Mohamed Elneny must be on his way. I don’t want to believe Aaron Ramsey could be leaving so that Emery is bringing in Nzonzi as his replacement. Of course, with Ramsey’s contract situation, anything is possible. The club could decide to sell him if he chooses not to sign a new deal but if he is leaving, I am sure neither Torreira or Nzonzi will be his direct replacement. Both can play a similar role to Ramsey but the Welsh midfielder’s primary role is more attacking.
Suggestions are that Elneny will be sold and maybe Granit Xhaka too. I doubt many Gooners would be disappointed if any or both of Elneny and Xhaka were moved on. Xhaka was bang average last season for Arsenal. He lacks positional sense and can be very poor in his tackles. Elneny is just not of Arsenal standard.
Nzonzi has a reported £35 million release clause in his contract which could make a deal straight forward especially if Arsenal decide to pay his release clause.
