5 possible replacements for Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid
Juventus have today completed a €112 million (£99.2m) deal to sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid.
The 33-year-old had been strongly linked with a move to the Italian Serie A champions over the past week before it became a reality today.
Ronaldo is Real Madrid’s all-time top goalscorer, helping them to a staggering four Champions League successes over the past five seasons.
The Portuguese superstar will leave humongous boots to fill at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium but here are five possible replacements that the Spanish giants may look at:
1. Eden Hazard
The Belgian superstar has been linked with a move to Real Madrid for some time now and this summer seems the perfect opportunity for Eden Hazard to move shores. With Chelsea finishing outside the Champions League places last season and the left wing role being vacated it makes perfect sense for the 27-year-old to switch clubs.
Chelsea will be reluctant so sell but Hazard can be a troublemaker when he’s not happy so you’d imagine this deal will go through if Real Madrid want to make it happen.
He only left rivals Barcelona 12 months ago for a world record transfer fee to sign for Paris Saint-Germain, however rumours of Neymar returning to Spain have been strong in 2018. And it’s Real Madrid who the Brazilian star is strongly linked with.
I find it hard to believe that PSG would agree to sell, at least for any reasonable fee, given that they spent £200 million on the forward, but the 26-year-old could still be an option for Real Madrid.
3. Kylian Mbappé
The transfer of Kylian Mbappé from AS Monaco to PSG has only officially gone through this summer having spent last season loan. And the French champions have not broken any Financial Fair Play rules apparently so they are in no need to cash in.
Were Real Madrid able to tempt the teenage sensation to the Spanish capital, Mbappé has played out on the right for both his current employers and the French national team. Real Madrid could use him out there and switch Gareth Bale back to the left.
4. Anthony Martial
Seemingly not wanted by José Mourinho at Manchester United, Anthony Martial could certainly be available to Real Madrid this summer. The 22-year-old is a goalscorer from out wide and would bring a completely different game to Cristiano Ronaldo.
Martial is a versatile player who could also play up front for the Spaniards. He’d give Real Madrid another pacey option from out wide also.
5. Mario Götze
The Borussia Dortmund star didn’t go to the 2018 World Cup because of a lack of playing time last season. Mario Götze was highly-rated as a teenager in Germany and started to live up to his expectations at both his first club and then when transferring to Bayern Munich. He even scored the winner in the 2014 World Cup final don’t forget.
Injuries have played a part over the past couple of seasons, but if Götze’s not in Dortmund’s first team plans then perhaps Real Madrid could get him substantially cheaper than what they sold Ronaldo for. The 26-year-old is both a playmaker and goalscorer from out wide.
