Gerrard hints at bringing Barcelona midfielder to Aston Villa
Aston Villa have lost three of their last four Premier League games ahead of their trip to Manchester United in the FA Cup on Monday night.
With the winter transfer window opening, new manager Steven Gerrard will have his opportunity to shape the Villans squad for the first time.
One player that the West Midlands club are believed to be interested in is his former teammate, Philippe Coutinho.
The Brazilian hasn’t been very popular at Camp Nou since his £142 million move from Liverpool in 2018, and even spent the 2019-20 season on loan at Bayern Munich, where he won the UEFA Champions League.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Friday, Gerrard described the 29-year-old as a ‘special footballer’, but would not say for sure that Aston Villa are in the market for Coutinho.
They are understood to be one of several Premier League clubs currently monitoring the attacking midfielder.
“He is someone I’ve got an incredible amount of respect for, but I don’t want to add to speculation because he belongs to Barcelona.
“I don’t think you get a nickname of ‘The Magician’ if you’re not a special footballer.
“I’ve got nothing but positive things to say about the player. He’s a friend of mine so if I’m asked the questions I can speak for as long as you want. But if you’re trying to link it to any speculation or catch me out you’re in for a long afternoon.”
Steven Gerrard played in the same Liverpool team as Philippe Coutinho between 2013 and 2015.
