Derby announce 7th summer arrival
Derby County’s rebuild continues today as the League One club announced their seventh signing of the summer.
The Rams had already announced the arrivals of Tom Barkhuizen, Joe Wildsmith, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Conor Hourihane, James Chester and David McGoldrick on free transfers over the past week.
Taking to social media, less than an hour before their first pre-season game ahead of the 2022-23 campaign, the East Midlands club confirmed the loan signing of 20-year-old centre-back Haydon Roberts from Brighton & Hove Albion.
The 6’1″ former England under-19 international spent the 2020-21 campaign on loan at Rochdale, where he made 26 appearances in League One, winning just five games and being apart of a defence that kept a clean sheet in four of those games.
Only yesterday evening did the former two-time champions of England announce that Curtis Davies and Richard Stearman had extended their stays at Pride Park, meaning Derby now have 17 players on their books – five of whom are centre-backs (six if you wanted to include Krystian Bielik).
Nathan Byrne is the only full-back currently in the squad, but the 30-year-old is expected to sign for a Championship club between now and the end of the summer transfer window.
That points to interim manager Liam Rosenior using a back three for the new campaign, in what will be the former 37-year-old’s first experience as a manager. He was assistant to Wayne Rooney as Derby were relegated to League One last season.
