Who is Chelsea, Man City and Liverpool target Romelu Lukaku?
The main contenders however, appear to be Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City (although the player’s agent recently claimed he wouldn’t be moving to Eastlands).
A Belgian striker playing for Anderlecht, Lukaku burst onto the scene during the 2009/10 season scoring 15 goals in 33 appearances – the club’s top scorer. What was more impressive was the fact that this young prodigy was only 16-years-old, quite a way to introduce yourself into professional football.
This season Lukaku has continued his progress with 10 goals in 20 matches, resulting in a whole host of top European clubs competing for his signature.
Despite his age, Lukaku already has all the attributes to compete at the highest level. Standing at 6ft 4in and weighing in at over 14 stone, comparisons have been made with Chelsea’s Didier Drogba. Asked about the similarity to the Ivory Coast hitman, Lukaku responded: “It’s an honour. Didier, along with [Emmanuel] Adebayor, is my idol.
“But he is a world class attacker and has scored more than 100 goals for Chelsea whereas I’m just starting out. It would be better to see how I compare when I’m his age.”
Quick, powerful, strong in the air and a clinical finisher, Lukaku possesses all the elements needed to become a world class striker. Being only 17 you would think that many of the older and more “physically strong” players would be able to control this new teenage sensation but that is simply not the case.
Internationally, Lukaku has already made his national bow after pressure from Belgian fans forced manager Dick Advocaat into selecting the youngster for a February 2010 friendly. The Anderlecht star didn’t look out of place though and fitted in well with the players around him. The 17-year-old scored his first goals for Belgium in November when he claimed a brace against Russia.
While arguably the most exciting talent in Europe right now, his tender years mean a move to one of Europe’s giants could be risky. Will he play every week? While the standard in Belgium isn’t the greatest, a couple more years in his homeland could be beneficial to the overall progress of this wonderkid.
That’s unlikely to stop the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur all clamouring for his signature, mind.
