The weekend in Italy – Inter back on form
Another week, another round-up focused on Inter. It comes with the territory of being a top Italian, and indeed European, football side.
The Italian media has spent the week blaming Jose Mourinho for “bleeding dry” Inter’s squad in their treble-winning season last year, while Mourinho and his fitness staff have sent their barbs back Benitez’s way, claiming “only one thing has changed”. It was all rather typical stuff from Mourinho and shows why the Italian press quickly grew tired of him. However, despite their lengthy injury list, Inter look to be turning a corner.
After edging past Twente 1-0 in the Champions League, Inter recovered from conceding an early Hernan Crespo goal to win 5-2 against Parma in “a crazy game” according to Rafa Benitez. A fired up Dejan Stankovic scored a hat-trick with Esteban Cambiasso and Thiago Motta getting one a piece to cap off an impressive performance, particularly when considering Inter were still without 13 players.
That result was made even better by the fact than no one else in the top six managed a win. Milan drew 1-1 against Sampdoria; Lazio also drew 1-1 against Catania; Juventus were lucky to come away with a point in their 1-1 draw with Fiorentina, while Napoli and Roma were crushed 3-1 away to Udinese and Palermo respectively. Inter still trail their Milanese neighbours by seven points, but things are looking up for Benitez and his team.
