My career in pictures… New Chelsea signing Fernando Torres

20 March, 1984: Fernando Torres is born in Fuenlabrada, Community of Madrid. At the age of two, Torres kicked his first ball when he started using his brother’s football around the house. He joins his first team at the age of five, Parque 84 – although the striker we all know today started out as a keeper.
1998: Atletico send an under 15’s team to compete in the Nike cup with teams from all around Europe. Torres is the star of the show with his team winning the tournament and the Spaniard himself being named the best player in Europe for his age category. Just a year later, Torres signs his first professional contract with the club.
2000: Fernando makes his debut with the club at the age of 16 against Leganes. He goes on to score his first goal in professional football a week later against Albacete.
2002: Atletico are promoted to La Liga and Torres starts to make his mark on the club – scoring 13 goals in the league season with Atletico finishing a respectable 11th. The following season Torres improves once more and nets 19, becoming the joint-top scorer in the league.
2004: Torres makes his debut for the Spanish national side although the player himself quotes two big disappointments in the year for his teams. Atletico just miss out on a European place and Spain are knocked out of Euro 2004 at the hands of neighbours Portugal in a group game.
2006: The forward says it’s a “dream come true” to represent his country at the World Cup – and he doesn’t disappoint. With seven goals in qualifying, Torres also scores three goals in the tournament itself, gaining many plaudits along the way. However, Spain are eliminated at the last 16 stage to France.
4 July, 2007: Against the wishes of Altetico supporters who adored him, Fernando Torres is sold to Liverpool for a fee of around £20m. Many experts in England call it a gamble with the striker’s goal scoring record not particularly prolific. However, Torres starts brilliantly with a goal on his home debut against Chelsea and never looks back, scoring 24 Premier League goals and beating Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record of the number of goals scored in a first season by a foreigner.
29 June, 2008: Torres continues his great club form into the 2008 European Championship and scores the winner in the final to give Spain their first major title in 44 years.
24 May, 2009: The Spaniard becomes the quickest player to 50 goals in a Liverpool shirt, in doing so, is regarded a club legend in the process. Injuries disrupt the next season for Fernando and although Spain win the 2010 World Cup, the striker doesn’t look anywhere near full fitness.
31 January, 2011: Showing some promising form under Kenny Dalglish, Torres is sold to Chelsea for a record £50m.
