Form of their lives – Amr Zaki

In September 2008, a certain Amr Zaki sealed a season-long loan move to play for Lancashire outfit Wigan Athletic. The Egyptian striker took to the Premier League like a duck to water, scoring seven goals in his first six games, which caused a media storm to label Steve Bruce’s capture as the coop of the season.

Braces against Liverpool and Hull – plus a superb knack for slotting home penalties – saw Zaki rumoured to be on his way in January to a number of the top four clubs. However, from the start of October to the end of the season, the bull-like centre-forward would only find the net twice more – both from spot kicks. Before long, unrest stirred between Zaki and the manager, with Bruce eventually sending him back home to the pyramids.
