Missing In Action – Manuel Almunia
Missing in action: Manuel Almunia
Last seen: March 27 2010 – Conceded a late goal against Birmingham at St Andrewss
Few goalkeeper’s have had a quicker fall from grace than Manuel Almunia. The Spaniard was in the shadow of Jens Lehmann for several years, and when he finally got the chance to shine he made error after error.
Despite numerous high profile mistakes – Champions league semi-final against Manchester United to name but one – Manuel had the full backing of Arsene Wenger until he decided to push the ball up over his head and into the net to scupper Arsenal’s title hopes. Consequently, the Gunners made two bids for Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer in the Summer, although they were both rejected. He bizarrely kept the number one jersey for the start of the 2010 campaign, however, following a defeat to West Brom at home, he’s suffered from that notorious elbow injury ever since.
The Future: Manuel will be on his way in January without fail. The two Poles, Lukasz Fabianski and the highly rated Wojciech Szczesny, have performed fantastically well this season and evidently hold the future between the sticks.
