Former England manager Steve McClaren has been sacked by Wolfsburg after less than a year in charge at the Volkswagen Arena.

Following a disappointing start to the Bundesliga campaign, the 49-year-old has been shown the exit door. Despite spending large amounts of money, most recently in January when he reinvested the funds from the sale of Edin Dzeko to Manchester City, McClaren could only guide Wolfsburg to 12th in the league.

A statement on the club’s website read: “VfL have parted ways with Steve McClaren. Pierre Littbarski is taking over.”
