The Rumour Mill

With January approaching fast, transfer stories are starting to heat up and here at Clean Sheets we’re going to do our best to separate fact from fiction.

Manchester United are being linked with a £16.5m move for Marko Marin – a player labelled the ‘German Lionel Messi’ – from Werder Bremen. Arsenal and Tottenham are also both thought to be interested in the 21-year-old who made brief cameo appearances at the World Cup for his country. (Goal.com)

Our verdict: Having sold their main playmaker Mesut Ozil in the summer it’s unlikely the Germans will let two of their stars go.

Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier is plotting a move for Wigan midfielder Charles N’Zogbia. It is believed that the Frenchman would cost around £7m but would also demand a £50,000 a week wage packet. N’Zogbia was close to an exit from the DW Stadium in the summer but a move to Birmingham broke down. (Daily Star)

Our verdict: Wigan are going to be reluctant to let N’Zogbia go mid-season but we can definitely see a cheeky bid from Villa forthcoming.

Liverpool are keen on bringing Ryan Shawcross to Anfield as a possible replacement for Daniel Agger. Although Roy Hodgson could face stiff competition for the Stoke man’s signature from rivals Manchester United who reportedly have first option to sign the defender. (Daily Mail)

Our verdict: With Jamie Carragher out for a considerable amount of time and Hodgson claiming that Liverpool “aren’t blessed” with centre-backs we predict that a bid is likely.

Roberto Martinez wants Manchester United reserve stopper Tomasz Kuszczak as his number one goalkeeper. The Wigan manager has lost faith in former England international Chris Kirkland and sees Kuszczak as an ideal target who would like to start playing regular first team football. (The Mirror)

Our verdict: This is a more than probable transfer. Kirky is well out of favour and Kuszczak will be desperate to play after only a handful of appearances for Fergie.

AC Milan have informed Manchester City that they are desperate for Mario Balotelli and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to link-up and are willing to take the Italian striker back to his homeland. Balotelli only signed for City in the summer and has been out injured for much of his stay (either that or having a scrap). (Caught Offside)

Our verdict: Nothing like a bit of bullsh*t to address the balance in this week’s Rumour Mill!
