Who are ya? Anders Lindegaard

Welcome to Who are ya?, the feature that distinguishes those players you know f*ck all about!

Today we’re focusing on Anders Lindegaard, a Danish goalkeeper who has recently been signed by Manchester United.

At 26, it’s unlikely that Lindegaard has simply been brought in to warm the Old Trafford bench. But will the Dane follow in the footsteps of his countryman Peter Schmeichel? Or join the Red Devil scrapheap alongside the likes of Roy Carroll, Mark Bosnich, Massimo Taibi, Fabien Barthez and Tim Howard?

Well, despite his age, Lindegaard has very little experience under his belt – suggesting the move could be a bit of a gamble by Sir Alex. In fact, up until 2009/10 Lindegaard had not played a full season at any one club and in total the 6ft 4in goalkeeper has only managed 77 professional appearances.

However, by coincidence or not, Lindegaard has an uncanny ability to associate himself with winning teams. While on loan with Kolding the team remained unbeaten in 10 matches having lost the four previous to his arrival. At his latest club, Aalesund, Lindegaard managed to land the Danish Cup with his team mates.

So what is he like on the pitch? At a similar height to current United keeper Edwin Van Der Sar, Lindegaard is known for his physical presence and aeriel dominance but his somewhat bulky frame makes him less athletic compared to other established keepers.

Worth a risk? Fergie’s reputation is decidedly dodgy when it comes to keepers so we’re surprised he hasn’t gone for a big name with more experience. We reckon if this kid gets thrown the United number one shirt from the off we could see a few blunders.
