Top 5 players in Serie A this weekend
Moments after having a header saved, the January signing chested down a Thiago Motta flick and fired a strike into the corner on the turn to seal a 1-0 victory in a difficult game against Lecce. The win gives Inter an excellent chance of catching up with rivals AC Milan in the chase for the scudetto with the derby looming.
4. Alessandro Del Piero (Juventus)
Tensions were running high in Turin with Juventus’ recent troubles, but Del Piero’s superb goal was a step in the right direction. The forward picked the ball up near the half-way line, advanced, took it past two players and struck past Michele Arcari with a left foot shot to seal a 2-1 victory over Brescia.
3. Edinson Cavani (Napoli)
Yet another brace for the Napoli striker takes his overall season tally to 32 goals. His two goals in Napoli’s 2-1 win over Cagliari means that with 26 in the league, he still has an outside possibility of breaking the record for the most goals scored in a Serie A season.
2. Dorin Goian (Palermo)
The Palermo centre back’s goal against Milan was rather simple – pushing a bouncing ball in the six-yard box over the goal line – but it was very important. The goal sealed a 1-0 win over the league leaders that gives Palermo their first win in six games, having lost all of their previous five, and also throws a curveball towards the top of Serie A, with Inter just two points behind Milan with the city derby approaching.
The Roma talisman’s position at the capital side was looking under threat for much of the campaign. Disagreements with Claudio Ranieri appear to have affected his form on the pitch but with Vincenzo Montella in charge Totti is back on form, getting two goals against Fiorentina in a 2-2 draw.
