Cult Hero: Neville Southall
Name: Neville Southall
Big Nev may have looked more like a father than a goalkeeper in his bright green jersey, however, his reflexes were truly outstanding – despite not being the usual 6ft plus. Coming to prominence at Everton, he was thought to be one of the best keepers in the world at one stage.
Managing over 750 appearances in an Everton shirt, Southall was instrumental in winning two league championships and an FA Cup at his time on Merseyside. His personal highlight was being named ‘man of the match’ in their cup final win against Manchester United in 1995.
Awarded an MBE in 1997, Southall didn’t retire until aged 43.
