The weekend in Italy – Milan stumble to Roma

AC Milan lost their first game in eight matches on Saturday with an unexpected home defeat to an improving AS Roma.

To make things worse for the Rossoneri, it was Marco Borriello, their former forward, who struck the only goal of the game in the second half. In a match dominated by the home side for long spells, Milan will feel disappointed that they have opened the door for other teams to close the gap on them.

Roma, a team who faltered badly at the start of the season, can now claim to be in that chasing pack with Claudio Ranieri’s men now seven points behind the leaders.

It was a frustrating weekend though for another team in the hunt for the Scudetto. Juventus were pegged back in the 90th minute away to Chievo Verona with Sergio Pellissier levelling Fabio Quagliarella’s early strike.

Lazio however, made sure they closed the gap at the top of Serie A to just three points with a thrilling 3-2 victory against Udinese. An own goal from Udinese defender Christian Zapata in the 89th minute ensured the Rome side of all three points. In a weekend of late goals, Napoli also made their mark and similarly closed within just three of the top with a Edinson Cavani strike in the 90th minute at home to Lecce.
