Who are ya? Fábio Coentrão (Liverpool, Real Madrid target)
Coentrao’s skillful footwork, high-speed dribbling and pinpoint crossing, combined with thunderous shooting from distance, make him a good bet to maintain Portugal’s recent tradition of producing world-class wingers. But where he has really shone is at the left-back spot which he as made his own and is currently one of the best left-backs in the world.
The left-back himself seems to have set his sights on a move to the Santiago Bernabeu, although he has also been linked with a move to Kenny Dalglish’s Liverpool, as he has made it clear that he will leave Benfica only for Madrid.
“What I want is to play for Real Madrid,” Coentrao said on Friday. “They are the best club in the world, the only one I will leave Benfica for.”
The 23-year-old Portuguese, who can also play as a left-winger, initially appeared to be on his way to German giants Bayern Munich, but the Bavarians are reluctant to meet Benfica’s €30 million (£25.96m) asking price.
After spending some time on loan at Nacional,Zaragoza and Rio Ave, he is a mainstay in the Benfica line-up and also in the Portugal national team.
He also shined at the 2010 FIFA World Cup held in South Africa and was one of the star performers for them.
