Who are ya? Fábio Coentrão (Liverpool, Real Madrid target)

By on June 9, 2011 - 31 views

Coentrao’s skillful footwork, high-speed dribbling and pinpoint crossing, combined with thunderous shooting from distance, make him a good bet to maintain Portugal’s recent tradition of producing world-class wingers. But where he has really shone is at the left-back spot which he as made his own and is currently one of the best left-backs in the world.

The left-back himself seems to have set his sights on a move to the Santiago Bernabeu, although he has also been linked with a move to Kenny Dalglish’s Liverpool, as he has made it clear that he will leave Benfica only for Madrid.

“What I want is to play for Real Madrid,” Coentrao said on Friday. “They are the best club in the world, the only one I will leave Benfica for.”

The 23-year-old Portuguese, who can also play as a left-winger, initially appeared to be on his way to German giants Bayern Munich, but the Bavarians are reluctant to meet Benfica’s €30 million (£25.96m) asking price.

After spending some time on loan at Nacional,Zaragoza and Rio Ave, he is a mainstay in the Benfica line-up and also in the Portugal national team.

He also shined at the 2010 FIFA World Cup held in South Africa and was one of the star performers for them.

Seems too much for Liverpool to spend as they are in major need of wingers.

Even if he can be used as a winger Liverpool would probably be better off in finding good left back cheaper, like Clicy and concentrate on getting wingers now that midfield seems to be in order with Henderson signing.
