Embarrassing moments in football – Ali Dia

By on December 25, 2010 - 47 views

Fourteen years ago, way back when Graeme Souness was manager of Southampton, he was recommended a player by the name of Ali Dia.

The recommendation had supposedly come from Liberian legend George Weah so Souness had agreed to allow Dia to try out with the club. After a lackluster performance in training the manager had put it down to the youngster having trouble acclimatising to England so allowed him a spot on the bench for the league game against Leeeds United.

Dia’s first opportunity in front of goal came early and with just 12 yards out he struck straight at the keeper. It was clear that Dia was completely out of his depth, and after coming on for an injured Matt Le Tissier, the substitute was substituted.

It turned out that he was simply an amateur from Senegal with absolutely no ties to ex-European footballer of the year George Weah whatsoever.

Dia ended up taking a business degree at the University of Northumbria, graduating in 2001.
