Smash of the match – Jonathan Walters

Stoke City had to defend for long-periods against a Liverpool side that dominated much of the game but couldn’t convert their chances. However, Stoke’s match-winner Jonathan Walters worked tirelessly throughout and held the ball up well when he had to. As well as winning the penalty, Walters also smashed it in emphatically past Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina.

Trash of the match – Charlie Adam

Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam has begun his Reds career positively but suffered a setback at the Britannia Stadium today. The Scot was guilty of too many misplaced passes and his achilles heel of trying to force the play too much came to the forefront. On occasions when Adam needed to keep it simple, he tried to overplay.

Miss of the match – Jordan Henderson

Not only did Jordan Henderson miss one great chance, he managed to miss three in quick succession. After being played through clean on goal by Liverpool full-back Jose Enrique, Henderson missed his first golden chance and then proceeded to be denied twice more as the ball came back from Stoke keeper Asmir Begovic each time.

Shock of the match – Luis Suarez open goal!?

Ok, this could count as a “miss” but everyone who has recognised the true goalscoring talents of Luis Suarez would have been stunned when the Uruguayan missed a gaping goal just 30 seconds from the end. The ball fell to the Liverpool striker in the box when Begovic made a meal of a punch, Suarez hit it first time with the ball going agonisingly wide.
