Arsenal will have to beat off competition from Malaga if they want to land Montpellier forward Olivier Giroud, according to talkSPORT.

Giroud, who helped guide Montpellier to their first ever league title this past season, is very much in demand after becoming the top goalscorer in France with 21 goals to his name.

Arsenal have already boosted their striking ranks with the signing of German international Lukas Podolski but boss Arsene Wenger will be aware that star asset Robin van Persie could yet leave the club this summer.

The Dutchman has just a year remaining on his Gunners’ contract and Wenger will need to look at potential replacements for the free-scoring 28-year-old.

One of the options appears to be Giroud who is a part of the French squad who will take part at Euro 2012. However, Arsenal could face a stern battle with Malaga who can also offer Giroud Champions league football next season after finishing fourth in La Liga in 2011/12.
