West Ham United closing in on former Newcastle target
West Ham United are closing in on a £5m move for Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga, according to the Daily Mail.
The 24-year-old Mali international forward almost joined Newcastle in January but the deal collapsed amid concerns over a knee problem.
Maiga has been tipped for a move to the Premier League for some time now but keen observers of Ligue 1 remain unconvinced of his capabilities to score consistently in England’s top flight. He managed only nine goals in 23 appearances for the French club last season.
West Ham would also have to consider the fact that he would be unavailable due to the African Cup Of Nations in early 2013 – should Mali qualify for the competition.
If Maiga were to join the east London outfit, he would be Sam Allardyce’s first major signing after being promoted to the Premier League. Maiga would face stiff competition in the form of Ricardo Vaz Te, Carlton Cole, Nicky Maynard and Sam Baldock for a place in the Hammers’ starting XI.
